Famous People Associated

  • Sir Walter Scott, as a boy, stayed with his grandparents at Sandyknowe, at the foot of Smailholm Tower.
  • St Cuthbert is reputed to have been born in the village of Wrangham, which used to be on New Smailholm Farm. All physical evidence of this village has disappeared.
