Smailholm Hospital

There was a hospital in the manor of Smailholm, which was probably for lepers, and referred to as 'Smalham Spettell' in the early documents. It is thought to have been at what is now Courthill, but no sign remains. It is recorded between 1420 and 1640 approximately. It may be the same place as 'Nenthorn Spittal' which is at the same site, just within Nenthorn Parish.
